Surgery Scandal in Manila - Perfume Canister in the Anus?

(Updated 3:30 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday identified five of the 15 members of the medical staff in Cebu City who may face charges for their misconduct during an operation to remove a perfume canister from a patient’s anus.

QTV’s Balitanghali reported that the three doctors and two nurses of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) who were involved in the Cebu “surgery scandal” are:

• Dr. Philips Leo Arias, head surgeon;
• Dr. Angelo Alinawagan, assisting surgeon;
• Dr. Max Joseph Montecillo, surgeon at an adjacent operating table;
• Nursing attendant Rosemarie Villareal; and
• Circulating nurse CarmiƱa Sapio.

The five, along with 10 others, will be facing administrative, civil, and criminal charges for their involvement in the scandal.

The Health Department said that though remaining unidentified, some of the 10 others were nursing interns, who will likewise be facing charges.

The 39-year-old victim in the said scandal has previously vowed to lodge civil and criminal complaints against the medical team.

The QTV report said that at this stage of the investigation, they see the medical staff as committing violations like simple neglect and grave misconduct.

In particular, the DOH said the medical team violated hospital surgery protocols when the operation was recorded on video without consent and when the medical team displayed disrespect with a patient, especially one who was under general anesthesia.

For her part, Central Visayas regional health director Susana Madarieta quoted VSMMC officials as defending the members of the medical team, saying their reaction was allegedly the result of a sudden outburst of emotion due to the ‘success’ of the operation.

“They were so ecstatic when they were able to successfully extract the object but they were not anymore aware of what was happening around, that people were already taking videos and everything because of the successful operation,” Madarieta said.

But still Madarieta said they are wont not to tolerate such behavior, adding “The reaction was very excessive also.”

In a separate dzEC report, Madarieta said he was able to speak to some of the members of the medical team, who she added appeared “remorseful” for the act. But Madarieta admitted that they are still trying to identify who uploaded the 2:54-minute video of the operation on the Internet. She said they suspect a medical student was the likely culprit.

Happy Earth Day!

On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. It was a time when cities were buried under their own smog and polluted rivers caught fire. Now Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, grassroots organizations, and citizens like you, what started as a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect our global environment.

Dear God

I came across this beautiful website called DEAR GOD, its main tag line is "Hear Us, One Prayer at a Time." People from all over the world send in their prayers. It's just overwhelming when you read about the different prayers or confessions that people send in. Its real, raw, sincere and very emotional.

Oh No!

Being an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW - yes we have an accronym!), which literally means a Filipino working in another country, we feel the pain when the Philippine's economy is failing. Even though I have been living in the United States for more than six years now, I have been in constant communication with my family and friends back home. Every month I also send money to my parents. And now, I really can feel the dollars leaving my bank account. The current exchange rate is $1.00 = Php 40.00. Thats a big jump from $1 = Php 48-50.00 a few years back. But I know if thats the case, it means the economy of the Philippines is improving. But its not. It is sad that corruption and greed still lingers the realms of the Philippine Government. I was optimistic with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as I know she is very smart and with her vast knowledge and experience in Economics, she would be the perfect president to turn the country around. But with all the news about the corruption in her government, it seems that power and money still rules.

Why Are You Single?

I was catching up with a long time friend last night and he asked me that question. Hmmm...seems to be a very popular question for me these days (or shall I say years?). I have been single for more than 4 years now. Why? I don't exactly know. My favorite response is -- "I haven't found the right one," or "I'm not yet ready," or "I'm focusing on my career for now." Woohoo. Yeah, those responses might have a glimmer of truth in them, but to be quite honest. I don't have an answer to that question. Those responses are just generic responses by everyone who's been asked -- "Why are you single?"

I don't think its even a valid question. Questions should be answerable. That question just isn't. No one really knows why they are single. Well, unless they have body odor. I'm kidding. Even those with odor problems deserve to be with someone.

It got me thinking though. How about I actually try to think of an answer. Why am I single? The first couple of years, I was trying to recuperate from my break up with my ex. We were together for around 4.5 years. Then I started traveling. Then I moved to New York City and had to establish myself. After a year and a half of living in NYC, getting a new apartment and finding a great job, I am ready. I've focused on my career but then I haven't found the right one.

My Two Best Friends!

Hollyweird!

SJP sighting in NYC!

So let's gay it up a bit. Yup, the ultimate star sighting has happened. A little more than a month before the long awaited "Sex And the City" movie premieres, I bump into no other than Ms. Carrie Bradshaw on the streets of New York City - 13th and 7th to be specific! It was one of those random days when I decided to stroll along chelsea and browse through the clothing stores that I saw Sarah Jessica Parker. It was funny actually. There was this very fashionable girl in front of me. I didn't pay attention much coz there's a lot of fashionable people around that area. And then this black guy...i mean African American person shouted:

"Hey Sex and the City girl!"

He then followed her and asked for her autograph. He didn't even know her name! Anyways, SJP graciously waited for the guy's pen and scrap of paper then gave him her autograph.

Ahhh...SJP!

A bit gay? A bit?!

Kitty Shit - Best Coffee!

A department store in London has started selling $100 shots of cat shit coffee. The beans are harvested from the caca of the civet cat from Indonesia. De Longhi makes the extremely rare coffee that is said to be the best of the best. Only 573 pounds of the coffee is produced a year.

They basically feed the pussy some coffee beans and wait for it to shit. A spokesperson for the store said, "The cats select the best beans to chew. It's rather like a natural filtering process." The shit is available for $100 a shot or in 3.5oz packs for the same price.

90 Day Challenge - UGH!!!

Jason Castro - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

It's been a while since I last posted a video from the American Idol performances. I feel that my blog is turning into one of those I-Will-Post-Anything-Popular type of blogs. But tonight, after watching Jason Castro's performance, I really had to post it...even if its very similar to the remake by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, I still loved it.

Again...

You were the happiness I can never have.
What do I need to give to have you in my life?
I guess it's something I can't even afford.
Happiness really has its price.

You're all that I wanted.
You're someone I can't even have.

I guess all that I can hold onto right now is myself.
Because I can't fall for you. Again.
I dont' want to.
If there's one thing I would deny right now, it would be my feelings for you.
Because I can never have you.
Even before, I never did.

Thank you.
For the happiness that you made me feel when I'm with you. For giving me the chance to embrace you when I feel lonely. For the smiles that you bring when I get to hear your voice.

I just don't want to lose you.
I'm just here for you.

It's long been overdue.
I have to go.

I don't want to fall. Again.

A Note from the Universe

Don't be afraid. You needn't slay the beast nor scale the entire mountain. That's not how it's done. You only need to move through today, Francis. Think of the distance you've already covered. Focus on your strengths. Let each new step remind you of your freedom. Let every breath you take remind you of your power. Seek out friends and guides; they're anxious to help. You're not alone. You're understood. This road has been walked before. Dance life's dance, just a few steps at a time, and in the wink of an eye you will wonder to yourself, "What beast, what mountain? Was I having a dream?"
